As we age, our faces tell the story of our life. The inevitable loss of skin elasticity and volume, coupled with the effects of gravity, cause the skin to sag and our face to develop lines and folds. While some people see this as the outward sign of life experiences (and, indeed, many cultures revere someone’s lines and wrinkles as a sign of wisdom) not everyone is happy with the loss of their youthful appearance.
Cosmetic surgery has developed a wide range of advanced procedures to restore a more youthful profile to a lined, sagging face.
And while it can’t give you back your youthful vigour, it can give you greater confidence and self-esteem to begin living your life more fully.
There are both surgical and non-surgical options to help you achieve the look you want.
Non Surgical Face Lift
The advantage of a non-surgical facelift is that you can experience great results without the risks associated with surgery. Many procedures take less than an hour and you can get on with your normal day-to-day activities straight afterwards. You can choose to have:
- Thermage – this uses radio frequencies to stimulate natural collagen production. Corrects: sagging in the face, neck and décolletage. Lasts for several years.
- Thread lift – this lifts sagging skin on the face using small biodegradable sutures which lift loose tissue on sagging cheeks and jowls. Corrects: wrinkles, deep lines and loss of definition in the cheek, lower jaw, neck and eyebrow region. Lasts for up to 18 months
- 8-point lift – this uses dermal fillers in eight areas of the face including the cheek, jawline and lip corners to rejuvenate and lift the face. Corrects: signs of ageing, soft tissue loss, lines. Lasts for up to 18 months.
- Dermal fillers – this injects a small amount of filler containing hyaluronic acid into the skin to fill out hollowed area, add volume and improve definition. Lasts for 4-8 months. Naturally biodegrades and disappears over time.
- Face fat transfer – this uses a form of liposuction to remove fat from any part of your body. The fat is then refined and injected into your fact to lift hollow, sagging areas. Lasts for several years.
Surgical Facelift
A surgical facelift involves making an incision (cut), lifting the skin and tissues and discarding any excess. The results can last for several years with correct care. However, as with all surgery, there are risks and, depending on the type of surgery you have, you will take a little time to recover. You can choose to have:
- A mini facelift – this concentrates on the lower part of the face only. Corrects less pronounced lining and sagging of the skin. Faster recovery time than a full face-lift.
- Forehead and brow lift – this lifts the forehead and elevates the brow. Corrects deep lines and enhances the overall appearance of your face.
- Mid-facelift – this restores the cheek and lower eyelids. Corrects tired, sagging cheeks and eye bags. Facelift and eyelid surgery – this is a combined procedure. Corrects deep lines and sagging, plus eye bags and wrinkles around the eyes.
- A full facelift – a cut is made at the temple, running along the hairline and ending behind the ears. The skin and tissues of the lower and upper face are lifted to smooth out deep lines and folds. An additional cut may be made under the jaw to correct skin sagging. Corrects deep lines, heavy brows and sagging skin. Performed under general anaesthetic.
