It’s the question we’re most often asked by women who are considering breast enhancement surgery and we spend a lot of time discussing with individual patients which option is the right one for them.
As with any kind of cosmetic surgery, such discussions are crucial and we would always advise talking with your cosmetic surgeon about the procedure you’re considering before going ahead to ensure you understand what to expect and what results it might achieve.
Deciding whether to have breast uplift surgery or breast implants will normally depend on the way your breasts look now and the way you’d like them to look after surgery.
What is breast uplift?
Breast uplift is a surgical procedure that restores sagging breasts to their original youthful position in order to achieve a younger silhouette.
Ageing, gravity, weight fluctuation and breastfeeding can all contribute to a woman’s breasts losing their tautness and starting to sag or droop.
This can affect self-esteem, confidence and self-image. Breast uplift surgery is an effective way to regain youthful firmness and shape.
It may be the ideal procedure for you if:
- you are unhappy with the way your breasts have sagged from their original position
- your nipples point downwards
- the skin beneath your breasts is becoming sore or irritated due to chaffing
- you are generally satisfied with the overall size of your breasts
There are three types of breast uplift surgery:
- Periareolar incision follows the shape of the areola and is ideal for someone with large areolas and minimal drooping.
- Vertical breast reduction incision is ideal for moderate drooping. The incision goes around the areola and extends downwards.
- Inverted T-incisions allow for maximum breast lift. The incision follows the areola but extends downwards and along the breast fold.
What is breast implant surgery?
Whereas breast uplift surgery corrects the positioning of the breast, breast implants create fuller breasts and increase your cup size. Silicone or saline implants are placed inside the breast tissue, either above or below the chest muscle. You can choose the size and shape of implant that you prefer to create your ideal breast profile.
It may be the ideal procedure for you if:
- you are unhappy with the size of your breasts
- your breasts are different sizes or appear out of proportion with the rest of your body
- your breasts have minimal drooping and your nipples are centrally located
We generally advise patients not to go up more than two cup sizes to achieve a natural look. Your surgeon will discuss with you the range of choices available.
For example, choosing silicon implants gives a more natural feel but requires a larger incision. Saline implants are generally recommended for patients with ample breast tissue as they can add volume and shape without altering the feel of the breasts.
Breast Uplift and Implants
Some people choose to have both procedures carried out simultaneously. This has the advantage of restoring youthful positioning and fullness to the breasts, producing optimum results. Only one hospital admission and recovery period is necessary although it is a more involved surgical procedure, which may increase the risks.
If you are considering breast enhancement surgery – the most popular of all cosmetic procedures – be sure to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon and ask to see their results. Take time to talk about the procedure you’re considering so you understand all the options and feel absolutely sure before going ahead.
