Fashions change, even when it comes to body shape. Gone are many of the gaunt, skeletal models of yesteryear to be replaced by an altogether more curvaceous generously proportioned, healthy-looking female profile. And right at the heart of the look is the “bootiful” big butt.
Made fashionable by women like Kim Kardashian West – a role model for the fuller figure – women are now striving for the so-called thicc look which is characterised by a bigger bottom and thighs with a slim waist. Ashley Graham, the first plus-sized British Vogue cover model is now one of the highest paid models in the world.
As the fashion for a fuller figure has taken off, demand for butt lift surgery has soared. In the US, it has become one of the fastest growing surgical procedures, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
In our clinic, we are seeing growing numbers of women seeking a more curvaceous and youthful posterior.
Brazilian butt-lift
A buttock lift or Brazilian butt-lift is a surgical procedure that adds volume to the buttocks and lifts them to create the shape and size that many women now strive for.
In the past, buttock implants were used to produce this look. But these have now been superseded by fat grafting as it has a lower risk of infection and feels more natural than implants, particularly when sitting.
How it works
A buttock lift is performed under general anaesthetic. Fat cells are collected from the area around the buttocks and abdomen using liposuction. The liposuctioned fat is then purified and injected into each buttock to add volume and lift. Just under a third of fat cells will reabsorb, however about 70% of volume will remain. The volume of fat required to achieve an uplifted profile varies but, as a general rule, we inject around 300mls of fat per buttock.
Depending on the extent of the surgery, buttock lifts are normally performed as a day case procedure. Following surgery, you will have small dressings around the areas of liposuction and fat grafting and a compression garment. Occasionally, you may require an overnight stay. The incisions created are stitched with dissolving stitches. You can usually go back to work after a week to10 days.
Pros and Cons of a butt lift
Pros:
A butt-lift can give you the youthful, shapely bottom you desire using fat cells from your own body. The procedure is quick and the recovery time relatively short.
Satisfaction rates with this type of surgery are high. Changing the profile of your buttocks can help to boost self-esteem and give you the confidence to wear a broader range of clothes.
Some women are born with a flat bottom or develop sagging tissues as a result of natural ageing or weight loss. The procedure takes fat from an area of the body where you don’t want it to be and injects it into a part of the body where you do want it.
Cons:
Like any type of surgery, butt-lift procedures come with risks. The most common of these are minor discomfort, swelling and bruising, possible infection and scarring.
More serious risks include an allergic reaction to the anaesthetic, nerve damage or excessive bleeding.
Thankfully these risks are small and the success rate is high.
Like all cosmetic procedures the results are not permanent and you may need to have further treatment a few years after surgery.
